Chinelos Carnival - Mexico

The Chinelos Carnival is celebrated in the state of Morelos, in Mexico. This carnival is very peculiar because it originates with the intention of making fun of the Spanish colonizers in the 19th century. The Chinelos dance dates back to the year 1807 in the town of Tlayacapan, Morelos.

The most widespread version about its origin refers to the quarrels that existed between Spaniards and indigenous people due to the exclusion of the latter in the Carnival festivity.

Among the dancers the strength of this uprising is felt against the former colonies.
